Online retailers to avoid – Computerwebstore.co.uk

I ordered something from an on-line retailer on Boxing day, the item was shown as “in stock” and I received an “order confirmation” on the same day. They debited my visa card – and then I waited.

On the 6th January I sent an email to their “customer support” email address asking for an update. I received no response. On the 19th I used their “contact form” to tell them that I was cancelling the order, and requesting a refund. I received the following automated reply -

This is an automated response confirming receipt of your email.

A member of our Sales Team will deal with your query as quickly as possible.

Usually you should receive a reply within 48hrs although this may increase during busy periods such as Christmas.

In the meantime please DO NOT send the same email more than once or to other departments this will only slow down our response times.

Computerwebstore Sales.

Not a particular promising response…. and it goes without saying that they didn’t respond within 48 hours, or 72… or even 96.

So I did a web search.

Now I feel really stupid – This company has been blogged about, commented on, and complained of many many times…

So what am I going to do?

I’m complaining to the trading standards office.

I’m willing to pursue this at some length, as I believe that the owner of this company is dishonest. I believe he is deliberately running this business in this way, and I believe that there should be consequenses.

  1. Hi Gary I would be interested to know how you get on with this, as I am looking to take legal action too. I have lost £200 to that website and it’s nearly a month and a half since I ordered a product that never arrived. It seems hundreds of people are in the same position but nothing is being done about it! Surely it’s criminal activity! I’m SO angry…

  2. Laura:

I think the same… it must be a scam. I never did hear from the trading standards people so can only assume that it’s still going on.

I did, however, manage to get my money back via the VISA system – if you paid by credit card, you can dispute the transaction. I hope this helps!

  3. I am a recent victim of Computerwebstore. I ordered a product in September 2009, they took payment the next day via Visa Debit. After many problems with this company I decided to call trading standards, they advised me to cancel my order under the Consumer Protection Regulations 2000, this means they legally have 30 days to pay me my refund. They failed to do this, I therefore have to claim my money back via my banks fraud department.

The addressee shown on Computerwebstore.com is actually a company called Mail Boxes Etc, computerwebstore rent out a post office box!

I have been in contact with the operations manager of Mail boxes etc to make them aware of Computerwebstore. Computerwebstore are in breach of Mail Boxes Etc terms and conditions (mail box rental points 6 and 7).
